Bedrest is NOT where it's at! Movement is the best medicine!

“OMG, bedrest and not moving isn’t what I should be doing when I have back pain?”

Our spine was literally created for movement. Think about it. 

.

Why would our spine be comprised of 33 separate bones if it was not intended to bend, lift, twist, etc?

.

IMO, if we were not supposed to move our spine, natural selection probably would have given ALL vertebrates (not just human beings) the boot by now.  But hey, look at us. Surviving and stuff.

.

The old school way to treat low back pain was to stop moving and stay in bed, but modern science shows that is no bueno.  In fact, they have shown that being in bed longer than 48hours can actually slow your recovery! In fact, they have found that movement is the best medicine.

.

All movements are not created equally though, so pretty please check in with a Physical Therapist rather than just watching some videos online.  I have a feeling you wouldn’t attempt surgery after seeing a video on instagram and the same should hold true with therapeutic exercises.

Just because you see a professional online do it does not mean it is right for you!
